Five University students will find the financial aspect of university life slightly easier following monetary awards presented to them by the Royal Agricultural Society of WA.

Annually the RAS assists young people studying agricultural subjects by contributing to their tertiary costs through the Australian Council of Agricultural Societies Coca-Cola Regional Scholarships program. Each of this year’s winners receives $2,000 they will use toward their studies.

The recipients are: Maddison McNeil of East Cannington; Courtney Wright of Redcliffe; Alicia Kemp of Hamilton Hill; Leroy McBride of Warnoro and Bridie Luers of Kensington.

Maddison, 19, in her second year, is studying for a Bachelor of Agribusiness degree at Curtin University and would like to work in the livestock husbandry area or animal science, health or nutrition industry.

Courtney, 20, is studying Veterinary Science at Murdoch University and harbors an ambition to work within the live export sector or as a rural vet working with cattle in the Kimberley region.

Alicia, 22, also studying Veterinary Science at Murdoch competed in the 2012 intercollegiate meat judging competition where she was selected as one of the top ten students to attend further industry training. Alicia intends to move to a rural mixed practice to develop a broad range of skills before moving into production animal medicine.

Leroy ‘Leo’ 19, studying for a Bachelor of Agribusiness degree at Curtin University is intent on working on rural extension programs and trial/research projects. Leo is acting as Curtin program coordinator for Curtin Volunteers.

Bridie Luers, 18, also is studying veterinary science at Murdoch University and would like to move to the country to utilize her skills. Bridie has had a long association with the Kellerberrin Agricultural Society, particularly within the equestrian events.

CEO of the RAS, Martin Molony says one of the core aims of the society is education and these scholarships are a valuable and important part of fostering a passion for agriculture.
