The Royal Agricultural Society of WA Welcomes Fresh Perspectives to Strengthen WA’s Agricultural Future
February 28, 2025
The Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia (RASWA) is delighted to announce the appointment of two dynamic and accomplished leaders, Lauren Patane and Reece Jerrett, to its Council. Reece and Lauren bring new energy, innovative thinking, and a passion for the future of Western Australian agriculture to the RASWA Council.
Lauren Patane, the 2023 WA Rural Ambassador, brings hands-on expertise as Operations Manager at her family’s business, Patane Produce, in Myalup, WA. With a double degree in Agricultural Science and Business Management from the University of Western Australia, Lauren blends her technical knowledge with a deep commitment to community engagement and leadership.
Lauren shared: “One of the biggest challenges facing agriculture today is the shortage of young people entering the industry. Many rural communities are struggling to attract the next generation, making it difficult to sustain local businesses, facilities, and services. However, for those who do pursue a career in agriculture, the opportunities are endless. With a strong work ethic and passion for the industry, young people can thrive, as agriculture is actively seeking and welcoming new talent with open arms.”
Reece Jerrett, the 2023 National Rural Ambassador, brings a unique perspective to the Council, having grown up in the coastal and suburban surroundings of Mandurah before discovering his passion for agriculture. His journey into the industry was shaped by his early involvement in poultry breeding and exhibition, which led to leadership roles in various agricultural organisations. A lifelong attendee of the Perth Royal Show, Reece has never missed an event, highlighting his deep connection to WA’s agricultural community.
“My pathway into agriculture was different from many others,” said Reece, “Growing up in Mandurah, I wasn’t surrounded by farmland, but I was drawn to agriculture through the Perth Royal Show and my early experiences with poultry breeding. When my family moved to Mardella in Serpentine Jarrahdale, my involvement in the sector only grew, and I realised the importance of connecting urban and rural communities. Agriculture is not just for those who are born into it—there are many ways to get involved, and I want to help more young people see the opportunities this industry offers”.
As President of the West Australian Poultry Association and a Councillor for the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale, Reece is passionate about sustainability, zero-waste initiatives, and fostering inclusivity in the agricultural sector.
Lauren and Reece will play a vital role in driving RASWA’s commitment to youth engagement, sustainability, and agricultural innovation. Their diverse backgrounds, hands-on experience, and fresh perspectives will help shape initiatives that strengthen the connection between rural and urban communities while championing a more inclusive and forward-thinking agricultural sector.
This occasion is also an opportunity to extend heartfelt gratitude to four retiring Councillors — Tony Devitt (Past President), Rob Wilson (Past President), Deane Allen, and Peter Telford — for their contributions and years of dedicated service to the Royal Agricultural Society of WA and the wider agricultural community.
John Snowball, President of the Royal Agricultural Society said: “Over the past few years, our WA Rural Ambassadors have been observers on our Council which has been a fantastic learning opportunity. As a Society firmly focused on the future, we are excited to welcome Reece and Lauren who have extensive agricultural experience and are very accomplished in their professions and communities.
They have already made significant contributions to the Royal Agricultural Society of WA and will be valuable additions to our Council. Having diverse views and experiences governing the Society reflects the wide diversity in WA Agriculture. We also thank our retiring Councillors for their many years of volunteer service and significant contributions over decades.”
